A taxonomy is a collection of terms (words), each of which represents some part of a domain or enterprise. thing or activity of importance to your organization. Taxonomies are commonly used to label documents in a given domain(i.e. Confluence pages) for the purposes of assigning meaning, organizing, and searching content. They are often valuable "sources of truth" for the official names of things (e.g. our taxonomy specifies that we refer to Theme Press as such, and not "ThemePress" or "themepress"). Individual terms in a taxonomy are often grouped into categories that represent a particular aspect or facet of the domain. This categorization helps keep taxonomy terms organized in a meaningful way.
Example of a simple taxonomy:Domain: Imaginary organization that makes widgets Departments | Office Locations | Employee Status | Current Projects | Past Projects |
---|
Accounting | Jupiter | Full time | Widget C | Widget A | Human Resources | Mars | Part time | Widget D | Widget B | Marketing | Saturn | Contract | Widget E | | Widget Design | Venus | | Widget F | | Widget Production | | | | | Here the headers show five categories (Departments, Office Locations,... etc.), with the official terms listed in the rows underneath. Though simple, such a taxonomy can easily translate to labels used on a page, thereby aiding in search and organization across a site. |
