Learn how to install Confluence, the base platform for Brikit.

In order to use Brikit's peerless products, you must first install Confluence, the content management environment created by Atlassian. This guide provides a general outline of how to install Confluence. Best practice, however, is to follow the instructions posted on the Atlassian documentation site, accessible in the link below.

Know your role

The person responsible for installing and configuring Confluence and Brikit products is the System Administrator. This role requires both comfort with, and confidence in, using the command-line interface, servers (especially Apache Tomcat), databases, file systems, and network tools.

Know your environment

Will you be installing Confluence on premises, on a local machine, or in the cloud? Do you have an existing database environment (if not, will it be created on premises, locally, or in cloud)? The answers to these questions will affect which Confluence download package you need and how to go about installation.

Fortunately, the type of Confluence you install will not affect Brikit products. [[is this absolutely correct?]] Brikit is ready-to-install once you have a Confluence environment up and running.

Download and install

It is best to follow the latest Confluence Installation Instructions from Atlassian's documentation. Roughly, these steps are as follows:

  1. Download Confluence from Atlassian's website
  2. Create an installation directory. This is where the Confluence download will be installed.
  3. Create a home directory. This is where local files and app-specific files (such as Brikit themes) are kept.
  4. Check the ports. Confluence requires that two (or more) ports be available in your network.
  5. Start Confluence.
  6. Choose installation type
  7. Enter your license
  8. Connect to your database. You may need to create a database environment first using MySQL, PostgreSQL, or some other relational database.
  9. Populate your new site with content (or import it from an existing site)
  10. Choose where and how to manage users
  11. Create your administrator account
  12. Start using Confluence

Install Brikit!

If you are reading these instructions here, you'll likely be installing Brikit and other apps. Follow these instructions on Installing and Uninstalling apps.
